The Battle Point Observatory celebrated its Grand Reopening on the summer solstice, Saturday June 21st with a full day of tours and exploration, drawing over 300 visitors, most of them first-time guests.
The event kicked off at 10:00 AM with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by BPAA President Frank Petrie, who welcomed guests and spoke about the observatory’s transformation and future. Bainbridge Island Mayor Ashley Mathews praised the observatory as “a community treasure where curiosity and discovery come together.” She was joined by Council member Clarence Moriwaki to celebrate the observatory’s new chapter.
Before cutting the ribbon for the re-opening, Hyla School graduate Grace Bonow shared her appreciation for her time as an intern at the observatory and the support she received from BPAA. Grace heads to Saint Andrews University in Scotland this fall to study astrophysics.
The open house format provided all visitors with:
-
bright and colorful new lobby murals painted by the Observatory’s artist in residence Deborah Milton;
-
previews of the new and expanded planetarium shows offered by Rudolph Planetarium Manager Erin Howard and Programs Coordinator Eleanor Uyyek;
-
demonstrations of the rebuilt observatory dome and new rooftop telescope with BPAA President Frank Petrie;
-
a visit with 2024 International Astrophotographer of the year Brian Puhl in the Gardiner Library; and
-
a tour of the Ritchie Workshop for telescope maintenance and classes for students of all ages.
