If Costco can start talking about Halloween before October, so can we! This image is of another section of the massive supernova remnant that was featured in last month’s newsletter. Like Fleming’s Triangular Wisp, the Witch’s Broom is composed almost exclusively of ionized hydrogen (red) and double ionized oxygen (teal). There is a third section, the East Veil, that in combination with these two create a complete structure called the Cygnus Loop.
The most exciting part is that this image was taken over two nights last weekend using BPO’s very own rooftop telescope and marks the near completion of the year(s) long endeavor to commission the telescope and configure the hardware, software and networking for completely remote operation! Very exciting!
