For the first time in over 50 years, NASA is sending a crewed mission on a trip to the moon.
The great Space Race of the 1960s saw the United States facing off against the Soviet Union to reach closer to the stars than ever before. After humans first set foot on the surface of the moon in the Apollo 11 mission of 1969, NASA continued launching a series of crewed flights to the moon for several years, concluding with Apollo 17 in 1972. While we have continued to explore deeper and deeper into the cosmos since then, that mission was the last time a human being was sent out of Earth’s orbit.
Until now.
With the Artemis missions, NASA plans to breathe new life into the previously stagnated lunar program and begin paving the way for crewed missions even farther from home.
