August Volunteer Opportunities at the Observatory
A big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who pitched in for our July events! Wow! It’s an exciting time with the Observatory back open and events blasting ahead, we could not do it without your generous time and help.
We’re rounding out the final days of summer with great volunteer opportunities for August. If you’re already a BPAA Volunteer, we appreciate all you do to help! Please log into VicNet to see the Calendar and sign up for a shift directly, or email volunteer@bpastro.org with the days & times you’re available. (And can’t do a whole shift, but would still like to help? Let us know, we’ll create a time to fit your schedule.)
If you’re not yet a Volunteer – sign up at “Apply” on https://bpastro.org/volunteer/ and share your skills and time bringing astronomy to our community!
“Movies in the Park” Star Parties – Friday nights in August
Aug 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. Shift: 8 pm – 11 pm
Do you enjoy sharing about the night sky? We’re looking for volunteers to help set-up and be outdoors on Sundial Hill with telescopes, helping park movie visitors take a peek and discover the wonder of astronomy. Are you interested in helping, but brand new to telescopes? No problem! We’ll team you up with one of our Astro Ambassadors for an easy training.
“Sounds of Summer” concerts – Wednesday nights in August
Aug 6, 13, 20, 27. Shift: 6 pm – 9 pm
Looking for volunteers to help at a mini Open House at the Observatory during the park music concerts. Greet visitors, hand out brochures, show visitors our art murals, and tell them about Planetarium shows and the science fun at the Observatory!
Second Saturday Science Talk (Saturday Aug 9, 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm) or Cosmic Conversations (Tuesday Aug 19, 6 pm – 9 pm)
These are our Science talks, and a mix of in-person and online attendance via Zoom. Looking for volunteers onsite at the Observatory for set-up, to help admit registered guests, and if you have computer skills to start and manage the Zoom connection.
Astro Night at “Movies in the Park” – Friday evening on August 29th
Shift starting set-up at 7 pm, TBD
Event Planner needed! The featured movie is “Galaxy Quest”, and is our summer end celebration for Battle Point Observatory with BI Parks! We’re hoping to offer both an Open House for interested visitors and telescopes on Sundial Hill, along with additional science exhibits and kids activities. Looking for a volunteer Event Planner, and also lots of hands-on assistance to make this vision happen. Sign up, share your ideas, and how you’d like to help!
And as a longer term volunteer role, there’s also a Social Media Team opportunity to help with Instagram or develop our YouTube channel, if you have an interest in content creation and science education. This is a role you can do when it’s convenient for you! Contact volunteer@bpastro.org if you’re interested.
THANK YOU for being a BPAA Volunteer, and contributing to science & imagination through astronomy!
